Biography

Nicola Evangelisti, born in Bologna in 1972 where he lives and works,
graduated at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Bologna.

Since 1995 he has developed an artistic research, both theoretical and practical, widely experimental, using installations, light-boxes, photography and video, always caring for the theme of light.

In the period 1999-2001 he works on the “crilex” cycle, inner flections on plastic matter by combustion producing light lines similr to the shapes of the fractal graphics, evoking cosmic explosions. This work and its theoretical input are rewarded with recognitions as the “International award Guglielmo Marconi” for which Evangelisti writes “A Proposal for a New Spatial Manifesto”, token tribute to his ideal master Lucio Fontana.

Since 2001 he identifies the mirror as the best medium for his light marks, introducing a strand of research he is still following with many alterations and developments.

In 2002 Evangelisti wins the Targetti Light Art Award with the light box Big Bang, now in the Targetti Art Light Collection. The curator of this collection, exhibited in many international museums as the Chelsea Art Museum in New York, the Centre for Conteporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, the Mak in Vienna and the MUAR in Moskow, is Amnon Barzel. Several catalogues of the exhibitions have been made, among them Light Art published by Skira.

The same year Evangelisti spent some months in California to prepare a solo exhibition at the BGH Gallery in Santa Monica where he introduced the monograph “Luminis Ora” encompassing his writing “Fractal Geometry as a New Principle for the Non Figurative Art”.

In 2004 he begins to be involved to the arguments of the Light Art, an art wave arising at international level in that period. In 2005 his work is consolidated by a strong link to the scientific world, proved by the writing of the “Digital Sculpture Project” presented at the Galleria PaciArte Contemporary in Brescia.

In 2008 Evangelisti is invited to the exhibition “De Naarcisse à Alice, miroirs et reflets en question”, organized in Brussels by ISELP (Institut Supérieur pour l’Etude du Language Plastique), together with Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Dan Grahan and other international masters.

The same year a solo exhibition, officially recognized as collateral event of the Biennial of Brussels, is held at Galerie Artiscope. Evangelisti artwork is acquired by the Arturo Schwarz collection.

In 2009 he creates, for an event of the Milano General British Consulate on the occasion of Euroluce, LIGHT BLADE, a site specific light installation in the portico of the Villa Reale, house of the GAM (Galleria Arte Moderna). Light Blade will be included in the LIGHT ART IN ITALY CATALOGUE, published by Politecnico of Milan, as one of the most interesting urban light installations of 2009.

In 2010 Evangelisti has been invited to Luminare - Biennale Lighting Culture in Frankfurt where he will exhibit LIGHT PULSE, a light sculpture irradiate by laser beams.
